Mumford/Boaks Family Tree
John MUMFORD was born in the year 1802 in a village called Blackthorn, near Bicester in Oxfordshire. His parents were Edward and Martha Mumford. At the age of 28, John, a common labourer, married 21 year old local girl and lace-maker Mary Cox on 30 August 1830. They had 8 children – 5 boys and 3 girls.

Thomas MUMFORD was born in January 1839 in Blackthorn Oxfordshire, same as his father. At the age of 41, he married 19 year old Caroline COLES from the neighbouring village of Arncott on 5th November 1860 and had their first child a year later. As their family grew, they moved to Bromley in Kent as by 1871 he was recorded as working as a farm servant at Sundridge Park. They had 7 children – 4 boys and 3 girls.

George Richard MUMFORD was one of those 7 children and was born 28th May 1875 in Bromley, Kent. He lived at various addresses in Bromley his whole life working as a horse-drawn cab driver and later as a builder’s labourer. In 1901 he married local girl Alice Kate Elizabeth BOAKS after she had given birth to their first child George William Archibald BOAKS below. He joined the Queen’s Own (Royal West Kent) Regiment in 1915 while Alice was bearing his 7th child and another was added a few years later. 5 boys and 3 girls in total.

George William Archibald BOAKS was born ‘out of wedlock’ on 25th June 1900 in Bromley, Kent. He was raised by his mother’s married sister Ellen (Nell) Mary Louise BOAKS and her husband William Henry (Bibby) EMENEY who by 1924 lived at 1 Cottage, Boston Lodge, Windmill Road, Brentford, Middlesex. He worked as a steeple-jack knocking down tall chimneys and as a dock worker and later a finance clerk at Brentford Wharf. By 1999 he had met a local girl, Hilda Victoria KING and they had a baby son called Ronald, who they had to give away to be raised by Hilda’s married sister Gladys KING. George was called up for national service at the end of WWII and placed in The Black Watch regiment based in Perth, Scotland. George and Hilda got married in 1920 and a daughter Doreen was born in Perth a year later. They lived with his aunt Ellen for a while, then following the birth of their third child Tony they moved to their own house at 218 Lionel Road, Brentford, Middlesex just before the start of WWII.

Doreen Ellen BOAKS was born on 9th October 1921 in Perth, Scotland while her father was stationed up there in The Black Watch regiment. During WWII she joined the WRAF, working at GCHQ Cheltenham and later worked as a typist and telex operator for various well-known companies. At the end of WWII she married her childhood sweetheart Douglas Norman LEE and lived in a newly built house at 72 Windmill Lane, Southall, Middlesex. They had 2 children, me and my sister Diane, but Douglas run off before I was born with a woman he met at work and played no part in my upbringing.
