Coast to Coast Diary

 

Lake District 62 miles April 2003

Day 1: St. Bees to Ennerdale Bridge, 14.25 miles over cliff paths, farmland and forest, climbing over Dent (1155ft). Weather fine and clear. Campsite at EB.

Day 2: Ennerdale Bridge to Rosthwaite (Borrowdale), 14.5 miles along lakeside, forest, climbing over Honister Hause (1740ft). Weather fine and clear. Youth hostel.

Day 3: Rosthwaite to Grasmere, 9.25 miles climbing over Greenup Edge (2001ft). Weather fine and clear.

Day 4: Day in Grasmere. Youth hostel.

Day 5: Grasmere to Patterdale, 8.5 miles climbing over Grisedale Hause (1935ft). Weather fine and clear. Campsite.

Day 6/7: Patterdale to Shap, 16 miles. A long climb over Kidsty Pike (2560ft) followed by a long lakeside walk. Camped overnight on lakeside. Weather fine but windy on tops. B&B in Shap then went home.

 

Penine Dales & Vales 78 miles August 2003

Day 1/2: Shap to Kirkby Stephen, 21 miles of low moorland and pasture across the Vale of Eden. Weather warm and clear. Camped overnight at Orton

Day 3: Kirkby Stephen to Keld, 13 miles climbing over Nine Standards Rigg (2165ft) and boggy high moorland into Whitsun Dale and Swaledale. Extremely hot and sunny. Campsite.

Day 4: Keld to Reeth, 11.25 miles of moorland hills following the River Swale. Hot and sunny.

Day 5: Reeth to Richmond, 10.5 miles downhill to B&B in Richmond. Hot and sunny.

Day 6: Day in Richmond. Camping a bus ride out.

Day 7/8: Richmond to Ingleby Cross, 23 miles over flat farmland of the Vale of Mowbray, camping overnight at Danby Wiske. Torrential downpour otherwise warm and clear. Heavy cloud over moors ahead. Camped at Hostel in IC then went home.

 

Cleveland Hills & North York Moors 55 miles (still to do)

Day 1: Ingleby Cross to Clay Bank Top, 12 miles up and down the Cleveland Hills.

Day 2/3: Clay Bank Top to Glaisdale, 19 miles of high moorland. Overnight camp at Blakey Ridge.

Day 4/5: Glaisdale to Robin Hood's Bay, 19 miles. Overnight camp somewhere.
